The Prayer!

Unless Jesus’ prayer is the proverbial “rock” too heavy for God to lift, his answer to this prayer will be testified in due time (1Timothy 2:4, 6).

Jesus is the propitiation for our sins and also for the sins of the whole world according to 1John 2:2. It was for this reason that he came into the world, (John 3:16-17; 18:11).

Jesus is the express image of the Father (Colossians 1:15). If I want to know what the Father is like I am told to get to know Jesus (John 14:7-9). It would seem that Jesus loves us and mourns over our condition (John 11:35; Luke 13:34). It is evident that it is God’s will that all men should be saved (1Timothy 2:4), and he works out all things out according to his will (Ephesians 1:11). Knowing these things, therefore, it can hardly be said that universal salvation is not our Father’s will. Anything asked according to the will of God is a request that is heard (1John 5:14-15), and the one praying has the confidence that his desire is granted.

Before Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, he testified that our Father always heard him (John 11:41b, 42a). With this in mind, as Jesus hung dying on the cross, among his last words was a prayer:

“Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

Who put Jesus on the cross? I know only that I am guilty. I put him there! He asks forgiveness for me and all who helped me do it. Has God answered Jesus’ prayer? Is there anything that Jesus ever asked that God would not or could not answer? Our answer to this question will testify not only of our knowledge of what Scripture says about our salvation, but also of what we believe about the love and mercy of God. Remember, Jesus, as our High Priest, asked (prayed) his Father to forgive all: the Romans, the chief priests, the Pharisees, the malefactors, his disciples (including Peter and Judas), all the perpetrators of evil throughout the centuries, right down to you and me! Did our heavenly Father grant what Jesus asked, or did Jesus ask something out of God’s will? What was the answer given to Jesus praying from the cross? Unless Jesus’ prayer is the proverbial “rock” too heavy for God to lift, his answer to this prayer will be testified in due time (1Timothy 2:4, 6).
