Over Whom Does Jesus Have Authority?

Sometimes men have the idea that it is up to them whether or not Jesus is Lord. This could not be further from the truth. Jesus is Lord whether or not I believe it or accept him as my Savior. And, to think that I am doing him a favor by submitting to him is…

John tells us that, immediately after the feeding of the 5000, Jesus put the apostles into the boat and sent them over to Capernaum, while he made his exit into the mountain to pray. Why did he do this? John shows us the people were about to try to force Jesus to be their King (John 6:15).

How do I make Jesus King or Lord in my life? Can I force him, and if so, doesn’t this imply I have power or authority over Jesus? How is it possible for Jesus to be Lord, if I am able to force him to do anything? The reality is: I have no power or authority over God. In the United States the people have the power to elect their leaders, but in the Kingdom of God things are not done that way. Jesus is already King! He is already Lord! He does not need either you or me to make him such. Jesus said in John 15:16 that he has chosen me, and I have not chosen him. When did this occur, since Jesus’ human ministry has been concluded for about 2000 years? Well, according to Ephesians 1:4 we have been chosen **in Christ** even before Adam’s sin in Eden! Scripture tells us we are unable to come to Jesus without our Father drawing us to him (John 6:44). Moreover, we are also told in the word of God that, through Jesus’ death, he will draw all men to himself (John 12:32). Therefore, it is not I who has authority in the matter of Jesus being King or Lord. I am unable to **cause** Jesus to do or be anything in my life. The ‘movers and the shakers’ are our Father and Jesus. God made Jesus Ruler over the new creation of God. I have no power or authority in this matter. I come only by invitation, and I am empowered only to receive or to submit myself by faith to the universal rule of Jesus Christ, and I allow him to place me under his Lordship by transplanting me from the kingdom of Adam into the Kingdom of God.

Sometimes men have the idea that it is up to them whether or not Jesus is Lord. This could not be further from the truth. Jesus is Lord whether or not I believe it or accept him as my Savior. And, to think that I am doing him a favor by submitting to him is like my thinking I am doing the fireman a favor for allowing him to rescue me from the burning building. I cannot make Jesus King—I have no power or authority to make him King. He is already King! The question then becomes: over whom is he King. Over whom does Jesus have authority? Over me?
