Why Has God Made Me Gay?

Many people, who make the claim to be gay, tell us they were always gay; they were born gay,[1] vis-à-vis God has made them gay. Well, although this may feel like it’s true, it isn’t. This has been concluded in a scientific study that shows there simply is not a gay gene. So, there must…

Many people, who make the claim to be gay, tell us they were always gay; they were born gay,[1] vis-à-vis God has made them gay. Well, although this may feel like it’s true, it isn’t. This has been concluded in a scientific study that shows there simply is not a gay gene. So, there must be some other reason, why folks become gay. The matter of being gay is, in reality, a mystery, as far as how it all begins is concerned. Sociologists don’t know why people are gay. Oh, perhaps some have strong opinions and think or say they know, but by and large no one knows, why so many of us are gay.

So, if God didn’t make a gay person what he or she is, how did anyone become gay in the first place. Does one choose to be gay? Perhaps, someone may simply find it easier to relate to his or her sex, and a gay lifestyle arises from there, but this certainly wouldn’t be every gay’s story. Moreover, if sociologists and other scientists simply don’t know why some folks become gay, is it possible for a layman, especially an ordinary believer of the Bible to discover why or how folks become gay?

Many folks, who are familiar with the Bible, believe that Paul speaks of homosexuality in the first chapter of his letter to the Romans. Some will disagree with that conclusion, but let’s presume it is so for the sake of argument. Paul tells us that God is upset with men, who suppress the truth, through their unrighteous behavior (Romans 1:18), and the reason he’s upset with men is, because he had made known very clearly what was true (Romans 1:19). Nevertheless, men didn’t treasure the truth, and, instead, became vain in their imaginations, professing they were wise, they became fools, and their foolish hearts was darkened (Romans 1:21-22). What were they doing that caused God to become angry?

Paul goes on to say that they made images of God in the form of men, birds, four footed beasts and creeping things (Romans 1:23). In other words, they bowed down to and worshiped creation rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25), and for this reason, God withdrew himself, allowing men the freedom to become unclean through their inordinate desires of their hearts (Romans 1:24). But, what does this mean?

It is because men dishonored God, by erecting idolatrous images of their perception of him (Romans 1:23, 28), that God gave mankind up to dishonor their own bodies. Women exchanged the natural means of sexual relations with that, which was not natural, and men did the same (Romans 1:26-27). So, how should we understand what Paul is saying?

I don’t believe homosexuality is sinful, as much as it is a penalty for idolatrous behavior. According to the scriptures, homosexuality doesn’t dishonor God, as much as it dishonors men! Moreover, homosexuality seems to be something that arises in society, because of society’s wicked behavior. In other words, whatever homosexuality is in terms of moral behavior, it is at least one of the results of mankind’s rejection of the truth about God and mankind’s embracing idolatry. Idolatry dishonors God, and rejecting the truth has its consequences (Romans 1:28). Thus, the end of dishonoring God produces behavior that dishonors men, vis-à-vis leaving natural sexual behavior to embrace homosexuality dishonors the human body, which is probably one reason why gays have been treated with such violence throughout Christian history, and from time to time even prior to Christ. Men who didn’t have homosexual desires mistreated and slew men and women who did.
