The “Epistle to the Hebrews” is, indeed, a remarkable work. It shows an intimate understanding of the Jewish faith, and how it morphed into Christianity, through those Jews who received Jesus as their Savior and Messiah. The word, gentile, is not once mentioned in the book nor is it even alluded to. This work was specifically intended for those Jews who had embraced Jesus as their Messiah.
The work is all about the supremacy of Christ. He is greater than angels, greater than Moses, greater than the Law, the Temple, its sacrifices etc. Christ alone offers eternal life. He alone is Savior, and he alone deserves our worship and allegiance. The book was written during a crisis, a persecution so great that it was feared by the author that the Jewish believers in Christ, i.e. those in Judea, would surrender their faith in order to return to Judaism, which rejected Jesus as Savior and King. It begins by showing Jesus as the Son of God who is the Image of God and ends with a call to go to him, Jesus, who is outside the camp, alluding to the time Moses stood outside the camp calling to those within to come to him if they were on the Lord’s side, after which judgment came down upon those who remained in the camp. Thus alluding to the soon return of the Lord to initiate judgment upon those who rejected him as their Messiah.
