I’ve lived through a remarkable era, as that pertains to both available information to the layperson and a kind of sexual revolution. Probably, foremost in my thinking about what I’ve experienced is that freewill needs to be respected by all. For example, centuries ago, in fact for millennia, the man was the unchallenged leader of the household, and his opinion was not only the law of the house, but his will was to be respected by all, not only by his wife and children but also by his freed slaves and their families. While we can agree that the leader of the household exercised his freewill, we cannot argue effectively that anyone connected with him in a relationship, also, freely exercised his or her desires or opinions.
It is this sort of thing that has been challenged almost constantly in my lifetime. Women, for example, have not only gained the right to vote (before my birth), but they have become politically active, becoming state and national authorities, military warriors, supervisors and CEOs in business, proving in every way to be an equal to her male counterpart, except, that is, in religion. In our present context, Christianity has actively opposed women having a role outside the home. In fact, many “Christian” authorities have brought “woman’s rights” to the state, seeking to disallow a woman’s right to authority over her own body. If such a worldview was used to oppose the human male, the debate would have gone nowhere, but the debate is not against male authority, but female authority. So, the struggle continues.
African Americans have cast away their seats at the back of the bus and lobbied and continue to do so for personal freedoms. They, too, have become legislators and heads of state, and they have contradicted and proved wrong the slanderous conclusions of Darwinian Bigotry. Today, they still struggle, but I’ve witnessed so much progress for them in my lifetime, and I stand in awe of their fortitude.
Finally, we come to the legitimacy of homosexuality. Admittedly, I don’t understand much of their plight. However, I do know that violence isn’t a fair or honorable method to address this issue. There are matters that concern homosexuality, in which I am totally sympathetic in their struggle. Some things, I’m still struggling with, while others I oppose, but even then, I’m willing to reconsider, if an opposing argument is stronger than what I believe is true, presently. In any case, homosexuality has come out of the closet in my lifetime. Homosexuals have made inroads into government, the military and have gained legitimacy in some Christian denominations, some even becoming leaders of local churches. The bottom line remains freewill. It is a gift of God and needs to be respected, even when we don’t understand all the issues.
