Throughout most of Christian history, homosexuality was viewed as unacceptable behavior, which led folks, who were inclined to embrace the homosexual lifestyle, to hide their behavior from the rest of society. Gays have not only been shunned and forced to secrecy, but they have been violently mistreated, because of the manner of life they lived. Was this fair? If not, how should we address homosexuality in the Church today?
In my lifetime homosexuality has come out of secrecy and into the open, even to the point where gay folks publicly marry one another, although they are unable to have children without using the services of the opposite sex to one degree or another. Some church denominations are more favorable to the gay movement than others. Nevertheless, it seems most of the church rejects homosexuality as valid or acceptable behavior. According to the Bible its practice is unclean and is even referred to as an abomination, and many church people, especially those who are evangelical, seem to believe that homosexuality is the unpardonable sin, although many wouldn’t admit they believed so.
Inasmuch as I am able to tell, this is where we are today in respect to homosexuality and gay marriage, but what does the Bible really say? Is homosexuality a sin, and, if it is, is it greater than all other sins? Is the Church, for example, correct in its more favorable treatment of divorce, which, also, used to be unacceptable and shunned by the faithful? What should we say about homosexuality and gay marriage? Does God really hate gays, as some hardliners seem to believe, and, just as importantly, WWJD?
